Tennis elbow is a chronic painful condition that is actually getting worse around the world due to many different factors. Essentially tennis elbow occurs due to repetitive motions and movements of the forearm. Think about how often we use repetitive motions in our daily lives right now and you can begin to see why this injury is on the rise. Personally I spend countless hours every day at the computer typing away and this is a great example of a the same movements repeated over and over again!
Basically, without getting too medical on you, what happens is that the tendon at the edge of the elbow gets injured via sports or computer work or almost anything really and becomes inflamed. This inflammation is very painful especially because of how much we use our lower arms.
Tennis Elbow History
Back in 1873 Runge was the first person to coin the term Tennis Elbow and he actually named it Lawn-tennis elbow for reasons that are largely unknown today. He first used the term in a medical paper around 1883. Since then the condition has simply increased for the aforementioned reasons.

Tennis Elbow Prevention
The old saying an ounce of prevention is completely and totally applicable to a tennis elbow injury. If you are engaged in ANY type of repetitive motions on a daily basis you should seriously consider doing some exercises and stretching before participating. Here are some basic ones to get you started:
- From a standing position with straight legs try and touch your toes. Hold this position for 5 to 10 seconds.
- Downward facing dog (for all you yoga enthusiasts!)
- Arm stretches - here you can do anything that gently stretches your arm muscles. Don't do anything too strenuous!
While these exercises and stretches have never really been conclusively linked to preventing tennis elbow anytime you warm up muscles before they are engaged you decrease the likelihood of an injury.
